I know, I know, you’ve heard the words a million times: self-care. Self-care has become a buzzword that so many people throw around. But just because it’s everywhere doesn’t mean you should ignore it. I find people use the word too liberally, like, if they do anything indulgent, they chalk it up to self-care, and that’s not really what self-care is all about. Yes, you can be indulgent when engaging in self-care, but it’s a mindset, not just a catchphrase to use when you buy an overpriced latte.
Self-care affects how we look and how we feel. Throughout the years, I’ve noticed that when women make themselves a priority, it enhances their self-esteem. Everyone’s lives are so busy with family, work, and each day’s obligations. One of my favorite quotes is “the more self-care, the more self.” Every woman should love the way she looks and feel her beauty at every age and every stage.
I always tell my daughter that she’s beautiful inside and out. I know that for her to really internalize and believe that message, she has to take the necessary steps to do things that boost her confidence and make her feel good such as purchasing a new outfit or getting a new hairstyle to make her feel special. Our self-esteem is intertwined with so many other aspects of life.
It’s also important to remember that self-care is essential, even when you don’t feel your best. Often, in challenging and stressful times, self-care is one of the first things we drop. When I talk about this with my three young boys, I frame it as a car and gas metaphor, with our bodies being the car, self-care the gas. It’s simple to visualize a car running low on gas and its consequences, so when I need “me time” I tell my kids that I’m running on fumes, or that I need to fill up. Besides stressing the importance of self-care to my kids, I constantly remind myself that in order to be the best mother for my children, I have to take care of myself.
The next obvious question is, what does it take to fill your tank? It’s easy to listen to other people’s suggestions for what works for them, but that’s just it – an individual preference. We’re all unique and what makes us feel soothed and cared for is different for everyone. Some people drink coffee in a corner, others hang out with friends, some read a book, others play music, while another listens to music.
